Dat was al lang bekend, maar we noemen het weer omdat Eastwood dit de vorige week in een interview nog eens bevestigd heeft en het voor de vele nieuwe lezers misschien interessant is.

Op zich is dat natuurlijk niet zo erg belangrijk. Maar het blijkt in gesprekken met mensen die niets van het libertarisme weten toch vaak meer indruk te maken dan op libertariërs.

De Advocates for SelfGovernment heeft een pagina op de website waar tientallen bekende personen staan die zelf gezegd hebben dat ze libertariër zijn. In allerlei categorieën.

Uit de filmwereld staan er bij voorbeeld ook op:

Russell Means, Aaron Russo, Tom Selleck, Howard Stern en vele anderen.

Clint Eastwood had dat interview met USA WEEKEND, waarin o.a.

“Ik houd het bij de libertarische visie, die iedereen met rust laat. Zelfs als kind werd ik al geïrriteerd door mensen die iedereen wilden vertellen hoe ze moeten leven.”

Op de vraag wat hij dacht over gelijke-seks huwelijken (dit zou een belangrijk punt kunnen worden bij de komende Amerikaanse verkiezingen):

“Vanuit libertarisch oogpunt kun je zeggen: “Ja, so what?” Je moet in complete gelijkwaardigheid denken. Mensen moeten in staat zijn om te zijn en te doen wat ze zelf willen – zolang ze andere mensen geen kwaad doen.”

  1. People assume Eastwood’s politics are reflected in the roles he plays, which Eastwood says isn’t true: "But if somebody thinks they know who I am because of a character I’ve played, it just means I played the role well, which is what you’re supposed to do.

    "Generally speaking, I always believe in being fiscally conservative, though it doesn’t seem either party is in that category. Socially, I’ve always felt very libertarian. I just think we should get off everybody’s backs. We don’t have to micromanage our society. It has to be run, but it doesn’t have to be beaten to death. I guess I’m a liberal in that sense, when it comes down to somebody trying to suppress what somebody else has to say."

    Which brings to mind two of the stars of "Mystic River": Sean Penn, who was criticized for visiting Baghdad before the beginning of the war, and Tim Robbins, whose anti-war activism before the war made him a target of charges of anti-Americanism.

    "I don’t know why there was that backlash against them," Eastwood says. "That’s their right. We weren’t at war. It’s not like they were standing next to an enemy cannon, waving their arms and saying, ‘Let’s go.’ I have no problem with what they did."
