Der Spiegel vestigt de aandacht op een boek van de Jordaanse journalist Fouad Hussein. Deze is zeer goed op de hoogte over, en heeft contacten met, Al-Qaida kringen. Hij heeft onder andere samen met Al-Zarquawi in de gevangenis gezeten.
In zijn boek “al-Zarqawi – al-Qaida’s Second Generation.” beschrijft hij het “Masterplan” van deze organisatie. Het plan van Al-Quaida voor de komende twee decennia.
Yassin Musharbash schrijft daarover in Der Spiegel dat het een absurd, idioot plan is dat door fanatiekelingen in hun eigen wereld is ontworpen, maar die er toch steeds weer in slagen door te breken in de reële wereld door hun gewelddadige acties.
Of (en in hoeverre) Osama Bin Laden daarin een hoofdrol kan blijven spelen, is onwaarschijnlijk. Hij heeft het veel te druk met zorgen voor zijn eigen veiligheid.
Het doel is een Islamitisch Kalifaat *) te stichten in zeven eenvoudige stappen.

The First Phase Known as “the awakening”
— this has already been carried out and was supposed to have lasted from 2000 to 2003, or more precisely from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington to the fall of Baghdad in 2003. The aim of the attacks of 9/11 was to provoke the US into declaring war on the Islamic world and thereby “awakening” Muslims
The Second Phase “Opening Eyes” is, according to Hussein’s definition, the period we are now in and should last until 2006. Hussein says the terrorists hope to make the western conspiracy aware of the “Islamic community.”
The Third Phase This is described as “Arising and Standing Up” and should last from 2007 to 2010. “There will be a focus on Syria,” Attacks on Turkey and — even more explosive — in Israel are predicted
The Fourth Phase Between 2010 and 2013, Hussein writes that al-Qaida will aim to bring about the collapse of the hated Arabic governments. The estimate is that “the creeping loss of the regimes’ power will lead to a steady growth in strength within al-Qaida.”
The Fifth Phase This will be the point at which an Islamic state, or caliphate, can be declared.
The plan is that by this time, between 2013 and 2016, Western influence in the Islamic world will be so reduced and Israel weakened so much, that resistance will not be feared. Al-Qaida hopes that by then the Islamic state will be able to bring about a new world order.
The Sixth Phase Hussein believes that from 2016 onwards there will a period of “total confrontation.”
As soon as the caliphate has been declared the “Islamic army” it will instigate the “fight between the believers and the non-believers” which has so often been predicted by Osama bin Laden.
The Seventh Phase This final stage is described as “definitive victory.”
Hussein writes that in the terrorists’ eyes, because the rest of the world will be so beaten down by the “one-and-a-half million Muslims,” the caliphate will undoubtedly succeed. This phase should be completed by 2020.
In hoeverre dit fantasie of realiteit is, is moeilijk te bepalen. Het lijkt er alleen wel op dat de stappen 2 en 3 aardig op weg zijn. Het blijft ook een vraag hoe de rest van de wereld hierop gaat reageren. Er kan vanalles gebeuren.
Interessant daarbij is dat Fouad Hussein de terreuraanvallen op het Westen omschrijft niet als een doel op zich, maar alleen als een middel om het Westen te verzwakken en de Islamieten bij elkaar te brengen. Ook hier lijkt het weer dat het plan erin slaagt een grotere onzekerheid in het Westen tot stand te brengen.
Vandaar dat Der Spiegel besluit met: It is all too easy to fall prey to disinformation — al-Qaida also excels in this area. Even Hussein’s scenario should be judged skeptically.
His book should therefore be read for what it really is: an attempt to second guess how al-Qaida terrorists think, what they really want and how they propose to get there.

En vrezen voor het herstel van een verenigd Kalifaat is net zoiets als vrezen dat alle Protestanten, Orthodoxen, Kopten en Katholieken zich volledig zouden onderwerpen aan het Pauselijk gezag. Ik ben niet zo thuis in de materie en dus een reaktie onder voorbehoud maar ik dacht dat de afslachting van de Armeniërs meer te maken had met nationalistische dan met religieuze motieven (zij het dat die zaken met
elkaar vervlochten zijn).
Destijds waren de "jong-Turken" in Constantinopel aan de macht, een groep
nationalisten die het Ottomaanse Rijk
wilden moderniseren en omvormen naar
een westerse eenheidsstaat.Echt religieus gemotiveerd waren die lui niet.
Zij gingen in combinatie met Duitsland en Oostenrijk-Hongarije de oorlog in en de vrees bestond dat de Armeniërs gemene zaak zouden maken met de Russen
vandaar de "preventieve maatregelen".
In ieder geval : de "Jong-Turken" zijn
al lang verdwenen evenals de Ottomaanse (soemnietische) kaliefen (die niet door de shiïeten en slechts
onder dwang door de Arabische soemnieten werden erkend).

Dat is ook ongeveer de strekking van het wikipedia-artikel en de verhalen die ik er tot nu toe over gehoord heb. Hoeft dan natuurlijk nog niet per se helemaal waar te zijn, maar ik zie ook geen reden om ernstig aan een dergelijke verklaring te twijfelen.
