European leaders could be about to hand corporations the power to overturn our laws in secret courts

The Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a huge corporate power grab dressed up as a trade deal. Tell European leaders to reject the TTIP’s attack on democracy.

Right now, Europe and the USA are negotiating a huge corporate power grab affecting literally millions of European and American citizens.

The Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (or TTIP) is called a “trade treaty”. But if agreed, the TTIP would actually hand corporations the power to overturn democratically decided laws, on everything from environmental protections to food safety, through a system of secret courts that only corporations would have access to.

European leaders are already nervous about how the public might react, and are not sure what to do. Under pressure, the EU is about to launch a big public consultation about the proposed system of secret corporate courts — but there’s a real danger that the loudest voices will be the giant corporations that stand to benefit. We don’t have long to prove that it’s people power that counts, not corporate power.

Can you tell European leaders to reject the TTIP and stop the corporate power grab?

The trade deal between Europe and the US wouldn’t be the first one with these sorts of rules. We’re already seeing what this means in practice:

  • In Australia, tobacco giant Phillip Morris is suing the government for its tough anti-smoking laws. 
  • The German government is being sued by Vattenfall, a Swedish energy giant, for phasing out nuclear power.
  • The pesticide giant, Dow Chemical, were able to sue the Canadian government when it tried to stop Dow selling a controversial pesticide.

The rules about corporations suing government aren’t the only problem with the trade deal that the EU is negotiating with the US. There are real worries that it could make life-saving drugs much more expensive, hand the music industry the power to cut off your internet supply, and mean an end to rules forcing global airlines to pay up for their pollution through the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme.

The very fact that Europe has been forced to open up parts of the deal to public consultation shows that pressure is building, and that this deal might not pass. The consultation only deals with “investor-state dispute settlement” — but these are the rules that allow corporations to sue governments, and are some of the most worrying parts of the proposed TTIP. We now have a real chance to get some of the worst aspects struck out of the deal for good — and we should grab it, and keep fighting to end this threat to democracy.

Tell Europe’s leaders to reject the TTIP secret courts and stand up for European democracy.

Wat Hartman zegt gebeurt nu voor voedsel uit oost-europa en van daarachter. “opheffen van protectionistische wet- en regelgeving”. maar wel met een hele grote kanttekening, de bescherming ging WEL over de voedselveiligheid. Dioxine in vlees, landbouwgif in graan en gewassen. Dat komt straks allemaal terug in het massa-voedsel.

    Nogmaals Hartman “Voor ‘free trade’ hoef je geen overeenkomsten”. Als voorbeeld de chloorkippen uit de USA. Die moeten waarschijnlijk toegelaten gaan worden. Op een vrije markt zouden we vrij zijn om te zeggen, die hoeven wij niet.

  4. Wat dat laatste betreft, hoop ik dat de technologie snel vooruit gaat. Dat je met handscanner boven de kip kan hangen om snel stoffen te analyseren. *bliep* chloor 0.02, dioxine 0.01, tja, heeft u ook nog een andere kip liggen…

  5. Het gaat om het vormen van een soort Transatlantische EU, en dan met de US, Mexico en Canada. In de VS zitten alleen internationale off shore bedrijven aan tafel (vernam ik op allerlei conspiracy sites), en zijn de onderhandelingen verder geheim (ook voor Congres en Senaat). Doel zou zijn dat er een zogenaamd private arbitrage komt, waarmee onder het mom van vrijhandel dan bedrijven wetgeving buiten werking kunnen stelllen, zoals bijvoorbeeld die welke import van hormoonvlees, ongelabelde producten en gemanipuleerde zaden verbiedt.

    Timmermans hoorde ik er laatst even in een terzijde over, dus te vrezen is dat er in de EU ook in het geheim aan gewerkt wordt, en dat we straks weer eens voor voldongen feiten zullen worden gesteld. Wat is erger dan één EU? Twee EU’s!

    Het enige wat je voor vrije handel nodig hebt is twee krachtige ambtenaren (die houden we nog even aan voor de duur van dit project) en een stevige shredder om al die bureaucratische regels (dát zijn de enige handelsbeperkingen) doorheen te halen.

  6. De puzzel begint vorm te krijgen.
    U ziet de aanvang van de wereld globalisatie.
    Met de ouwe jongens krentebrood handelsafspraken.
    Zoals Nederland ooit, als zeven provincieen begonnen is,
    zo zal de wereld zich ook vormen.

    Europa globaliseert en met Europa de rest van de wereld.
    Er zullen nog vele strubbelingen te overwinnen zijn,
    maar uit eindelijk zal er wereld wijd worden samen gewerkt.
    De communicatie is er klaar voor en organisaties worden op elkaar afgestemd.

    In Nederland zijn alle staats bedrijven reeds vrij gemaakt
    voor verhandeling, door middel van privatisering.
    Tot voor kort, waren deze bedrijven eigendom van de Nederlandse burger.
    En waren wij Nederlanders er de baas over.
    Inmiddels is dat alles verandert, of het een verbetering is
    moet nog blijken.
    We hebben ons daar, niet over kunnen uitspreken.
    Misschien, ben ik te democrities?
